Ford Cortina Savage

Alan has owned this car for a couple of years and decided that it was time to get it back on the road. Prior to coming to Restore-A-Ford, Alan had the metalwork addressed, shell blast cleaned and zinc phophate primed. The shell has now come to Restore-A-Ford in readinesss for final finishing, panel alignment and paintwork.
Unfortunately, due to fire damage the panels had been distorted. This meant that all the panels required dressing back into shape and heat shrinking to re-tension the steel. After this had been completed, the whole car needed skiming over with a coat of stopper to get the panels smooth, straight and ripple free. As the car was to be finished in black this process was vitally important and took some time. As the pictures below show, the bootlid was in much the same condition and also required completely skiming in stopper before any prep work could begin. The shell previously had a new complete front end fitted, so the wing arches to the front needed to be rolled as per Savage specefication to allow the wider wheels to be fitted once the car is completed.

The pictures below show the underside of the car. Again the shot blasting had completely removed all the old coatings from the underside and wheelhouses. All seams were re-sealed prior to a new coating of rubberised anti-chip underbody coating being applied. The shell was completely primed using a high build primer and then left to stand for a week or so. This was done to ensure any sinkage would occur now as opposed to after the paint had been applied.

Once the car had been block sanded in preperation for paint, the car was refinished in Ford Black including the engine bay, boot area and inside of the shell. This was completed in 2-pack basecoat then laquered to acheive that depth of shine you see in the pictures. The shell has yet to be polished to remove some small imperfections and give it that final mirror finish that this special car so fittingly deserves. Once this has been completed and the panels refitted to the car, the section of the rear panel will be re-finished Silver.

Once the car had been polished the panels were re-fitted to the car and aligned. The rear panel was re-finished in Silver prior to us fitting the suspension components to enable the car to be taken home on Alan's truck. Alan came to collect the car on a glorious day and she looks an absolute stunner outside in the sunshine. So now it's over to Alan to begin the long process of re-fitting the car of all it's parts in time for next summer. We for one, can't wait to see this Savage all back together and on the road again.

Alan's comments: 'It looks better than expected, so glad I decided to stray from originality and go with the Black. We have to agree!
